History:

The Downer Home, located at 7 Prospect Ave. (later changed to 1207 and then 1201 Prospect Ave.), was built in 1875 and was originally used as the residence of Judge Jason Downer and his wife, Alcy.  When Alcy Downer died in 1888, she willed the house to the elders of Immanuel Presbyterian Church to use as a rest home for Presbyterian clergy and their wives (other Protestant ministers were welcome if space was available).  By 1965, the house needed many repairs and the number of guests had dwindled to almost none.  Consequently, the elders of Immanuel Presbyterian asked for and received permission from the county court to sell the property.  While in operation, over 2,000 guests stayed at the Downer Home.  The records consist of reports, minutes, correspondence, receipts, booklets, and historical information.
