Abstract: Ephraim Mariner was one of early Milwaukee’s most prominent lawyers. He came to Milwaukee in 1850 and was admitted to the bar the following year. He specialized in real estate law but was extensively involved in banking and railroad promotion. At the time of his death in 1911, Mariner was reputedly one of the largest landowners in Milwaukee. His son, John Watkins Mariner, was also extensively involved in real estate. In 1920, John formed the Mariner Realty Company and served as president until his death in 1930.
Scope and Content: The records consist primarily of property-related documents, i.e. deeds, mortgages, and patents that involve both Ephraim and John Mariner. Many of these documents pertain to some of Milwaukee’s most prominent early citizens, such as Byron Kilbourn, E. B. Wolcott, Daniel Bigelow, and Talbot C. Dousman. There are also maps/plats/drawings/blueprints focusing on property in the Town of Milwaukee, especially around the Villages of Humboldt and Mechanicsville. And there is material dealing with the widening of Kilbourn Ave. in the 1920s and 1930s.
