Abstract: Gertie was a mallard hen who laid eggs in a piling just south of the Wisconsin Avenue bridge on April 25, 1945.  Milwaukeeans, desperate for some levity during World War II, were captivated.  Thousands lined the bridge to watch Gertie and her ducklings, and she became a national celebrity.  Eventually, the family was relocated to the Juneau Park lagoon.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of newspaper clippings and three copies of The Story of “Gertie,” published by the Milwaukee Journal.
