Globe – Van Doorn Corporation, 1903 – 1993

Title: Globe – Van Doorn Corporation, 1903 – 1993
Call Number: Mss-2123
Bulk: 6.0 cu. ft.

Historical Note:
In 1880, master craftsman Bernard Trepte founded Globe Wire & Iron Works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Originally the company manufactured products such as wire goods, bank grills, and ornamental fences.  In 1905, the firm was incorporated and branched out its product line to include park benches, steel stairs, and the elevator car.  As the need for elevators increased, the company began to specialize in that line of work.  During the Great Depression, as other businesses were failing, the company acquired the assets of another well-known manufacturer of elevator cars, The Van Doorn Company of Quincey, Illinois.  As a result of the drought in the high-rise office construction, after 113 years as one of the leaders in the elevator industry, Globe – Van Doorn closed its doors in 1993.

Administrative Note:
The collection was processed on July 19, 1994 by Jeewon Schally.  The finding aid was retyped on July 19, 2011.
