Abstract: The World’s Columbian Exposition took place in Chicago in 1893. The Fair commemorated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival to the North American Continent in 1492. More than 27 million people from 46 countries attended the 600 acre fair. The United States hosted a number of smaller world’s fairs throughout the 20th century. St. Louis, Chicago, New York City, Buffalo, San Francisco, and San Diego hosted fairs. The collection also includes information on the Centennial celebration held in Philadelphia in 1876. The fairs attracted national and world-wide attention and featured numerous exhibits that concerned national companies, histories and looking toward the future.

Scope and Content: This collection contains information on the World’s Columbian Exposition that took place in Chicago 1893, as well as other World’s Fairs, expositions, and centennial celebrations throughout the United States from the year 1876 to 1942. The Columbian Exposition section of the collection includes books, guidebooks, albums, souvenir books, photographs, photograph booklets, information about exhibits, and illustrated scenes from the city of Chicago and the fair. The second part of the collection that concerns various World’s Fair expositions and centennial celebrations includes information on the Pan-American World’s Fair Exposition in Buffalo (1901), the St. Louis World’s Fair (1904), The Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco (1915), the Chicago World’s Fair (1933), the San Diego (1936) and San Francisco (1940) World’s Fair, The New York World’s Fair (1940) and the Centennial celebration in Philadelphia (1876). The collections include brochures, guidebooks, information about exhibits, photographs, illustrations, and photo booklets.
