Biographical Note: The Nunnemachers were one of Milwaukee’s most prominent families.  Jacob Nunnemacher was born in Switzerland in 1819 and came to Milwaukee in 1843.  He operated a prosperous meat market until he moved to the Town of Lake in 1854, where he directed a thriving farm and distillery.  His sons, most notably Rudolph and Robert, were involved extensively in Milwaukee’s business community-especially banking, manufacturing, and grain/shipping.  The Weschlers were yet another prominent family, though their Milwaukee roots only reach back to 1909, when Daniel D. Weschler moved his family to Milwaukee from Erie, Pennsylvania.  Since 1875, Weschler had been involved in the malting business, and he resumed that line of work in Milwaukee with the formation of Daniel D. Weschler and Sons, Inc.  His sons continued the business after Daniel’s death in 1913.  The Nunnemacher and Weschler families were joined when Anita Nunnemacher married Edward A. Weschler in 1914.

Abstract: The material consists of correspondence, diaries, clippings, scrapbooks, photos, postcards, wills, travel logs and genealogical information and is arranged by individual and/or family.  The bulk of the records pertain to Anita Nunnemacher Weschler and Edward A. Weschler and, of particular interest, are their World War I correspondence, diaries and photos.

Access and Use: No restrictions

Language: English, German

Administrative Info: The collection was donated by Herman Nunnemacher in 1969.  The collection was processed by Kevin Abing in 2000.
