Docents conduct guided tours of our historic sites for the general public. Using techniques like question/answer, role play and storytelling, docents encourage guests to explore our historic properties. Docents assist in the development of educational programs and conduct special activities for children, adults,
and families.

Requirements:
Historic Site Docents must have a desire and ability to work with visitors of all ages and backgrounds and adapt to seasonally-changing content and attendance at the sites. Volunteers must be dependable, pleasant, helpful and able to communicate effectively. Volunteers must be 18 years or older or accompanied by an adult. Teachers and individuals with education and history backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Reliable transport to and from the site is required. Most roles require standing and walking, sometimes on uneven ground. Accommodations can be discussed.

Time Commitment:
At the end of the training period, volunteers must work one shift per month (based on need) to remain active.

Training:
Volunteers will be teamed with an experienced guide or staff member who will help you develop a presentation outline. You will shadow your training partner’s programs and are also encouraged to spend time alone in the galleries as well as use our library and archives for additional research. Please note: an extensive training packet and staff support will be provided for most opportunities.
