Abstract: The White Family consisted of Nancy Metz-White, her husband Joseph White, and their twin daughters Michele and Jacqueline.  Nancy was a local artist who designed and created sculpture pieces constructed mainly out of discarded scrap metal, heating and cooling ventilation material, and other various metal items.  Originally from Madison, she graduated from UW-Madison with a bachelor’s degree in art education and also did graduate study there as well. Primarily noted for creating large-scale outdoor public sculptures, her most famous large-scale sculptures include “Tree of Life” in Mitchell Boulevard Park in 2002, “Magic Grove” in Enderis Park in 2006, “Helping Hands” at Mead Public Library in Sheboygan, and “Fantasy Garden” installed on St. John’s On the Lake plaza.  In addition to being a sculptor, Nancy also was an art teacher and the Creative Art Coordinator at Urban Day School Elementary from 1970 to 1978.

Joseph White was born in 1926 in Michigan.  He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern University and also served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict.  He worked at Inland Steel Products Company and was eventually promoted to vice-president.  He left Inland Steel and formed his own company, Syncon, to focus on modular construction projects.  He also was involved in various civic efforts.  He was on the boards of the Modjeska Youth Theater and Mitchell Street Business Improvement District.  Civil rights was another of his passions.  He helped found and served as chairman of the Northshore Council of Human Relations (NSCHR). The NSCHR was a local community group whose main purpose was to demand equality and bring harmony to all citizens in the Milwaukee communities.  Their primary focus was the fight for fair treatment, equality, and the well-being of African American community members and the integration of public schools in the Milwaukee area.  He passed away in 2009.

Scope and Content: The majority of this collection includes documents, photos, and slides relating to Nancy’s life as an artist.  The documents consist of resumes, artist statements, exhibit brochures, paper work depicting the process of setting up an exhibit, tax statements, artwork invoices, and art submissions forms.  Photos and slides depict her artwork and sculptures in various exhibits or shows.  The material pertaining to Joseph White include meeting minutes, membership forms, booklets, demonstration information, and costs relating to the NSCHR.
