Whose Stories Shape Milwaukee? A New Conversation Series from the MCHS

September 9, 2026|Exhibits, MCHS|

Milwaukee’s history isn’t just found in photographs, documents, and artifacts. It lives in the stories of the people and communities who have shaped this place.

As the Milwaukee County Historical Society works to tell a more complete story of Milwaukee, we want to create more opportunities to hear directly from the people who have experienced that history, and to talk about how the past connects to the Milwaukee we know today.

That’s why we’re launching Connecting Community Voices, a new discussion series happening every other month. Each conversation will bring together community members to explore a different Milwaukee community, its history and the experiences that continue to shape it. Funded by the Wisconsin Humanities Converse and Connect Grant.

Our First Conversation

The Latine Experience in Milwaukee County
Thursday, September 17, 2026 | 5:30–6:30 p.m.

Milwaukee County Historical Society | 910 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Milwaukee, WI 53203

Held during Latin American Heritage Month, our inaugural conversation will explore the Latine experience in Milwaukee County. Panelists will discuss how their cultural identities and personal and family histories have shaped their experiences in Milwaukee, while exploring contemporary issues including immigration, education, belonging and societal expectations.

Meet the Panel

Moderated by Margarita Sandoval Skare, a former Milwaukee Public Schools librarian and longtime community volunteer, the conversation features Eloisa Gómez, community and civic leader and co-author of Somos Latinas; Adamali De La Cruz, community public historian and Marquette University history graduate; and Juan Miguel Martinez, lifelong Milwaukee resident, journalist and Milwaukee County Board member.

Come Be Part of the Conversation

There is no single story of Milwaukee. Connecting Community Voices is an opportunity to listen to the many voices that make up our community, learn from one another and consider how our shared history continues to shape our future.

Join us for the first conversation in this new series!
