Abstract: Hugo Broich was born in 1831 in Prussia. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1856 and eventually settled in Milwaukee, where he found work as a photographic painter. He learned the photography and lithography trade, and by 1861, he had a studio of his own. In 1861, he moved into a spacious photography studio on Spring Street (later Grand Avenue and now W. Wisconsin Avenue) across from the Plankinton House. In addition to prospering as a businessman, Hugo married Hedwig von Cotzhausen, a member of a prominent Milwaukee family, in 1857, and they had four children. Hugo passed away in 1905 after being struck by a street car.
One of Hugo and Hedwig’s sons, Franz Joseph Oscar (b. 1871) married Marie Elise Herrietta Muegge in 1905.
