Abstract: Anson W. Buttles (1821- 1906) was one of Milwaukee’s earliest settlers, arriving in 1843.  A civil engineer, he surveyed the first railroad in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad.  He also served as a Justice of the Peace, County Superintendent of Schools and as clerk for the Town of Milwaukee for 50 years.  His grandson, Anson M. Buttles, Jr., was appointed honorary historian for the Village of Fox Point by the village board in 1977.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of excerpts from Anson Buttles’ diary, 1865-1869, as County Superintendent of Schools; correspondence and reminiscences pertaining to the role of the Buttles family in early Milwaukee; and surveyors’ field notes of the new Washington Road.  There also are records pertaining to Anson M. Buttles’ appointment as Fox Point historian.
