Abstract: Wilma Giese was born in Germany and, after World War II ended and her home city of Cologne in ruins, she and her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1950.  They initially lived on a relative’s farm near Wausau, WI, and moved to Milwaukee in 1957.  Wilma found work cataloging books at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee library.

Scope and Content: The collection contains a typescript copy of an article Wilma wrote describing her journey to America and settlement in Wisconsin.  Her story won first prize in the 1985 “How I Found Liberty” essay contest sponsored by the City of Festivals Parade.  The collection also contains the December 1985 issue of Der Monat magazine, which includes an article “150 Jahre Deutsche in Milwaukee.”
