Milwaukee County Citizenship Commission, 1938-1965
Title: Milwaukee County Citizenship Commission, 1938-1965
Call Number: Mss-2115
Bulk: 3.8 cu. ft.
Historical Note:
In 1939, the state legislature passed an act that formed a committee under the leadership of the County Superintendent of Schools. The committee’s purpose was to establish various forums to inform citizens about the operations of the various levels of government and about their responsibilities as citizens. In addition, the committee promoted naturalization for the foreign born and recognized young people who had reached voting age within the previous year. In 1945, the statute was amended to provide for the formation of the Milwaukee County Citizenship Commission to assist the County Superintendent as the vehicle to perform these duties. The records consist of correspondence, minutes, programs, memos and other ephemera that document the commission’s (and director Michael S. Kies) various programs and activities, especially its “Get Out the Vote” efforts.
Administrative Note:
The collection was reprocessed in July 2005 by Kevin Abing.
