Abstract: Milwaukee’s Common Council passed an ordinance establishing a police force in September 1855.  William Beck, a former New York detective, was named the city’s Police Chief.  Political patronage was the rule in the department’s early years until the 1880s when the State Legislature passed a law creating a police and fire commission to insulate police appointments from political influence.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of annual reports, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, flyers, various police publications and other ephemera.
