Harold Stanfield Photographs

Harold Stanfield worked as a photographer throughout his life.  One of five brothers, Harold Stanfield was born into a photographer’s family.  His father was a photographer, and he along with all of his brothers also became photographers for local newspapers.  Harold Stanfield began his career in 1922 with the old Wisconsin News.  He then joined the Milwaukee Sentinel, where he stayed until 1929 when he first joined the Milwaukee JournalStanfield went into business for himself in 1935, but returned to the Milwaukee Journal in 1942.  He spent the next 21 years working for the Journal as a staff photographer, until he retired in 1963.  Stanfield was married to Armanda, and they had three children: James, Robert and Harold.  Stanfield died in 1973, leaving behind a collection of beautiful photographs of the mid-20th century.

The collection of photographs document events and individuals in Milwaukee.  The collection includes many subject areas.  He documented buildings, roads, agriculture, and other architectural elements in Milwaukee.  However, the most unique part of his collection is the documentation of everyday life in Milwaukee.  Stanfield captured children, public figures, and common people in Milwaukee from the period of the 1930s to the 1950s.  These images show people in everyday life, attending church, visiting locations in Milwaukee, or simply walking down the street.  His images provide us with a visual record of life in Milwaukee during this time period.
