Elizabeth Plankington was the daughter of prominent Milwaukee businessman John Plankinton. By middle age, and early 20th century, Elizabeth was considered a leading Milwaukee philanthropist. In Hamptons Magazine published in 1909, she is described as, “Not merely a woman of fashion, she is a traveller, especially of unbeaten paths. She is a business woman, thoroughly versed in legal usage. Above all, Miss Plankinton is a generous and public spirited citizen of her native city.” Over the years Elizabeth gave many gifts to the city, including in 1885 a statue of George Washington, erected in Monument square. Because of her father’s achievements and her generous nature the early 20th century in Milwaukee reflected on the Plankinton house and family as one of immense importance to the growth and success of the city.
