Historical Note:

Raphael Baez, Sr., was one of the first Mexicans to make his home in Milwaukee.  He was born in Pueblo, Mexico, in 1863.  He studied music at an early age and moved to Milwaukee in 1884 to become organist and musical director for a Milwaukee church.  He eventually resigned that position to study piano.  He became one of the city’s prominent pianists.  His wife, Mary Schoen, was a noted vocalist in her own right.

They had three children.  Ralphael Baez joined the Air Corps in World War I and remained with the service for the rest of his career.  His brother Francis served with the Navy in World War I and worked for many years with Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.  Mary was the youngest daughter.  During World War II, she worked with the Navy’s Bureau of Yards and Docks.  The records consist of programs, sheet music, correspondence, clippings, photos, and other ephemera.

Administrative Note:

The collection was processed on Dec. 6, 1996 by Steve Daily.  Additional material was added to the collection and was reprocessed on Sept. 24, 2004 by Kevin Abing.
