Abstract: Carl Doerflinger was an early Milwaukee educator who worked extensively with the founder of Milwaukee’s German-English Academy, Peter Engelmann.  Doerflinger enlisted with the 26th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, reaching the rank of first lieutenant.  He was actively involved with the Wisconsin Natural History Society and was an early proponent of a public museum in Milwaukee.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of correspondence, clippings, certificates pertaining to Doerflinger’s educational work and his Civil War service.  Also included are an article by Doerflinger on the American school system and one share of stock in the Wisconsin Soldiers’ Home belonging to Augusta Barkhausen, May 1865.  Oversize items consist of two issues of the Milwaukee Herold (May 16 & 23, 1863) containing information regarding Doerflinger’s Civil War service, a diploma from the athletic festival held at Baden-Baden by the Gymnastic Union of the Upper Rhine in 1870, and a commemorative issue of the Germania (no date) regarding the reunion of the 26th Wisconsin.
