Abstract: Garden Homes was the nation’s first public housing project. Socialist Mayor Dan Hoan promoted the effort to help ease Milwaukee’s housing shortage. Construction began in 1921 and was completed by 1923. The property, occupying the area of N. 26th Street, W. Atkinson and Teutonia avenues, included 105 living units in 93 free-standing buildings. It was designated a historic district and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
Scope and Content: The collection consists of stock subscription certificates, Garden Homes Company prospectus, newspaper clippings and an article by Paul Jakubovich.
