Abstract: Norbert Janowiak (1921-1993) was a successful commercial and portrait photographer who opened the Janowiak photography studio on 914 N Plankington Ave, Milwaukee and later in Brookfield. Janowiak entered the US Army Signal Corps in September 1944 and served as a photo unit officer until demobilization in May 1946, having achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant by the time of his relief. He was stationed in Central Europe and was present at the Potsdam Conference (1945) as well as the liberation of Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp near Linz, Austria. After returning to Milwaukee, Janowiak worked as a photographer until the early 1990s.

Scope and Content: The bulk of the collection consists of commercial negatives and photographs, a name/subject index of which is being currently created. Photographs include large numbers of commercial photos from Milwaukee based companies as well as portraits. Photographs and slides from Potsdam conference, concentration camps, and central Europe are also included in a separate wartime photo box. Wartime manuscripts include orders, service papers, abstracts and personal letters. Manuscripts also include certificates/awards, receipt and expense journals, travel maps, brochures, as well as commercial advertisements and magazines.

Language: Primarily English. Some items are in German or French.
