Abstract: John F. Maertz was born in 1879 in Reedsville, WI. He was the son of Fred C. Maertz, a merchant, who built a hotel in North Milwaukee, in 1905. John opened Maertz Dry Goods Store, later renamed Maertz Department Store, in 1907, right next door to his father’s hotel. He served as Vice-President of the North Milwaukee State Bank, and was director and organizer of the Northwestern Amusement Company, Inc., which operated Zenith Theater, managed by his brother, Ed. For a time, John was also City Treasurer and Alderman of North Milwaukee.

Scope and Content: Consists of Abstracts of Title for Maertz properties, a special election newspaper issue edited by John F. Maertz while he was running for Alderman, a copy of a 1995 newspaper article on a log house built by Maertz family members in 1924, an issue of Milwaukee North Star from 1965 featuring a photograph of a young Maertz relative, and two theater/dance programs starring Maertz family members.
