Abstract: Lee Wells Millard was born in Montrose, Michigan, in 1876. He held a variety of jobs in Michigan before relocating to Milwaukee in 1903. He was a stutterer for more than 20 years before he developed a “Natural Method for Correction” and wanted to share his discovery with others who stammered. With the assistance of his brother Dr. Frank Millard, who was practicing in Milwaukee, Lee established the Millard Institute for Normal Speech (also called the Northwestern School for Stammerers). The school occupied quarters on Grand Avenue and First Street. It was so successful that Millard moved the school in 1914 to larger quarters at 2316 Grand Avenue (now 2316 W. Wisconsin). Lee passed away in 1943.
Scope and Content: The collection contains photos; a copy of Lee Millard’s book, Stammering: Its Origin and Millard Advanced Natural Method of Speech Correction; an engagement announcement and “Wedding Memories” booklet for Virginia Millard (Lee’s daughter) and Kenneth Manders, 1931; list of visitors for Lee Millard and Elizabeth Nelson’s (Lee’s wife) funerals; newspaper clipping re Jim Manders’ florist shop in Shorewood, 1984; 1903 yearbooks from the Oshkosh Normal School, 1903, and Solomon Juneau High School, 1949.
