Abstract: John J. Orton was born in Madison County, New York, in April 1812.  He studied at Burr Seminary in Manchester, Vermont, before enrolling at Yale College in 1838, graduating in 1842.  He studied law in Albany and was admitted to the bar in 1846.  Three years later he settled in Milwaukee and practiced law for many years.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of deeds, legal papers and a 1943 newspaper article concerning a long-running legal feud between Orton and Josiah Noonan over the Humboldt Paper Mill.  Also included is a civil engineers’ report to the proprietors of the Humboldt Paper Mill.
